An exploration in texture.

Texture: One of the seven elements of art. It conveys a variety of messages and emotions. I love to use it in every piece I design! Creating a certain mood through use of surface texture or glaze or a combination of both, results in my pieces being more complex and interesting.

Growing up, I was so fortunate to have fabulous art teachers who let me explore and experiment! They had such a powerful influence on me and I greatly appreciate each one of them. My strong background in art led me to study and receive a degree in Interior Design at the University of Alabama. I received the highest honor my senior year, the “ Most Outstanding Senior Interior Designer Award”, which I hold dear to my heart, and thank my wonderful teachers for the tools they have given me to succeed. I also had a chance to study Art History abroad at King’s College in Chelsea, London England. From there, I went on to work at Architectural firms designing a hospital, a library, and other commercial projects. One of my boardroom designs for a hospital was published in a lighting magazine. Pretty cool! I took some time off to have two beautiful children, Will and Mark, who have , along with my husband, Darryl, inspired me greatly in my work. I later went out on my own for many years designing residential, which I also enjoyed. I explored jewelry design as well. All of these tools have been wonderful in helping me reach my new passion - clay. Oh, there are so many ways to manipulate clay and for me, it is probably my favorite medium! At the moment, stoneware has me intrigued. I love its strength and durability. How awesome is it that you can take a ball of clay and turn it into something useful and beautiful! I hope you enjoy looking at my new creations in stoneware! Everything I make is durable, microwaveable and dishwasher safe, unless it is noted in a particular piece. Thank you so much for looking today. I will be posting new items frequently, so please come back!

Below is a pencil drawing I made for my boyfriend, Darryl, while in college, who later became my husband! I wrote his name in the sand, in the right corner. He played football for Newberry College and later was inducted into Newberry’s Hall of Fame. ( Have to brag on him, ya know!)

With love,

Nancy
